On July 18, B. Braun Kenya celebrated a milestone that the company had achieved in their production plant for Infusion Solutions and Eye/Ear Drops within the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Athi River in the greater Nairobi area. On that morning the 10 millionth bottle of Infusion Solutions was produced - 18 months after the factory had started the production. The factory of B. Braun Kenya in Athi River is B. Braun´s second largest investment on the African continent, acquired in 2018.
“Why is this milestone so important for B. Braun in Kenya? We have transferred German technology to Kenya and created 200 jobs. Technical challenges have been overcome by our skilled production team, and together, we have managed to bring down the production costs such that we can compete on the local market”, says Dr. Torsten Dönhoff, Managing Director of B. Braun Kenya, in his speech at the celebration of the production record in the presence of guests of honor and representatives of the Kenyan business and health sectors.
The actual milestone achievement represents the latest chapter of the success story that B. Braun is currently writing in East Africa supplying medical devices and pharmaceuticals to public and private hospitals. In Kenya the company is pioneering by producing locally and selling their products directly - without middlemen. This allows for attractive pricing and a high coverage of Kenyan patients with innovative products. Reliable supplies - even in uncertain times - has become another pilar of the success of B. Braun in Kenya.
The recent milestone achievement for the locally produced Infusion solutions proofs the viability of producing locally and selling directly. All 10 million units have been sold and the demand for this innovative product in East Africa is further increasing. Encouraged by this success story the company has decided to continue their investments in Kenya. In 2023 a fully automized production line for Eye/Ear Drops will start production. For 2024, B. Braun Kenya plans the production of Dialysis Solutions for the East African market in Athi River.
